Ebony

Ebony is a collective term for tropical hardwoods of different varietals from the genus Diospyros. Only the very dense, hard and heavy heartwood is used, and it is known for its deep black colour which sometimes features grey streaks. In making string instruments, ebony was traditionally used to craft fingerboards, frogs, tails, pegs, purfling and mutes as well as other ornamental elements such as inlays.
