Can someone please explain what’s so special about old violins? Okay, fine, they’re usually prettier if you like antiques. But are they really better? Or cheaper? Or both?
Not long ago a neighbour was telling me that her daughter plays a historic violin (although I must say, I do wonder how it is they can tell how old these things are). This lady strongly suggested we get my son an old instrument too if he ends up sticking with the violin. He hasn’t been playing for long yet, so we aren’t that far along. But I still don’t understand why everyone is so into old violins. Don’t they just fall apart at some point or maybe end up in a museum? Out of curiosity, I looked around at a music shop once and had them show me a few. The new ones really appealed to me: they have something fresh about them.
