The Hans Weisshaar ateliers were founded by master violin maker Hans Weisshaar in 1947 in order to provide professional violin maker services to LA musicians. Weisshaar studied violin making at the German State School for Violin Making in Mittenwald and came to the US after several years of work in Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany. He joined the workshops of William Lewis and Son in Chicago and Emil Hermann in New York, where he met Simone F. Sacconi.
His LA atelier became a fixed star in the world of stringed instruments and welcomed the most excellent musicians such as Pablo Casals, Jascha Heifetz, Yehudi Menuhin and Joseph Szigeti. His restorations of the “Red Diamond” Stradivari violin and of the same maker's “Bass of Spain” cello wrote violin making history. Hans Weisshaar was a co-founder of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers.
In 2004, 13 years after the death of Hans Weisshaar, Georg Eittinger, Master Violin Maker, took over the Weisshaar workshop. Having studied violin making in Mittenwald himself – just as Hans Weisshaar – Ettinger is sharing the same roots of craftsmanship, adding his experience as a former employee of J&A Beare and his expertise in restoration and fine historical instruments, that is respected worldwide. In 2005 he opened the company's Berlin violin making and restoration workshop as a branch of the Hans Weisshaar atelier in LA.
